What’s the Big Deal about Jeremy Lin?

If you are a basketball fan, or even if you just happen to flip over to ESPN at most any given point in time, then it is likely you will hear an earful about basketball’s latest rage, Jeremy Lin. Twenty-three year old Lin plays for the NBA’s New York Knicks, and he’s really making some headlines these days. But what’s the big deal about Jeremy Lin? Read on to find out.

Lin’s humble beginnings. Lin was born in San Francisco to Taiwanese immigrants. Neither of his parents, father Gie-Ming nor mother Shirley Lin, are over five-foot-six tall, making Jeremy’s six-foot-three stance a bit of an oddity in his immediate family. Gie-Ming taught his son to play basketball at the local YMCA, and Shirley formed a National Junior Basketball program to give her son, who showed promise at even a young age, enough play time. By the time he was a senior in high school, Jeremy Lin was captain of the Palo Alto High School basketball team.

The slow rise to fame. Lin did not go to college on a basketball scholarship. As a matter of fact, he did not receive even one scholarship offer to play for a college basketball team, and he was not even drafted after graduating from college. His foot in the door was a partial contract to his local team, the Golden State Warriors. After sitting the bench during most of his rookie season, Lin was assigned to the NBA D-League three times in a row before being waived by the Golden State Warriors in the following preseason. He then landed at the Knicks, where he once again was assigned to the D-League. In February of 2012, although he’d previously played very little for the Knicks, Lin led his team through an unexpected winning streak and was promoted to the starting lineup. The result was a global show of respect and support, often referred to as “Linsanity.”

Why the Linsanity? For starters, Lin’s unlikely rise to fame makes him somewhat of a phenomenon. Additionally, Jeremy Lin is one of only a few Asian American players in the history of the NBA and the only ever American of Taiwanese descent in the league. But when you look at the bigger picture, it’s easy to see that Lin is more than just a novelty act. He’s a great player. In his first year of experience alone, he has played at a beginner level that arguably surpasses greats like Chris Paul, Isaiah Thomas, and Magic Johnson.

As Linsanity continues to sweep the globe, everyone seems to be wondering what will come next for Jeremy Lin. The only thing that is certain is that he is not going anywhere but up.

One More Post About Tim Tebow: Explaining the Inexplicable

It feels superfluous to write anything about Tim Tebow at this point. Everyone is trying to figure out what is happening with this guy. Half want to believe there is some kind of inexplicable explanation for why this guy continues to win close games week after week–they want to believe even if they know they don’t.

The other half wants to rationalize what is happening by noting the other players on the team (most notably Willis McGahee, Matt Prater, and the entire defense) are playing extraordinarily well.

I’m not disagreeing with either side.

The defense is making plays and Matt Prater seems like he could drill a feild goal from 75 yards out at Mile High. But there’s also that weird mystical feeling watching this team in the fourth quarter. You wait for things that shouldn’t happen to happen and they always seem to happen. Why would Marion Barber, a veteran running back, not know he needs to stay in bounds? While well within range of a field goal in overtime Barber fumbles the ball (part defense making plays, part what the hell was that?).

I don’t know what the explanation is for Tebow and this Broncos team doing this week after week after week. I’m not going to pretend to have a unique insight on the subject. I’m just going to say it’s interesting. It’s entertaining. It’s fascinating. And I can’t wait for next week’s game.

What did you all think?

Week 11 NFL Lines

We are getting into “must win” weeks for a lot of teams. My beloved Eagles have a must win every week here on out (unless they lose again, in which case the season is over, so who cares) and the Chicago Bears have proven they are a serious threat to the champs. The season is getting interesting, what do you all think?

Overreaction to the Eagles Loss

Full disclosure, I’m from Philadelphia and I am an Eagles fan. So it’s possible I’m too close to this story. I may be too emotionally invested with the future of this team to accurately diagnose the regression of Michael Vick. I don’t care. I’m going to do it anyway. It’s possible my emotion will help me get to the truth of the matter. Probably not.

Philadelphia is a city that loves underdogs. We can probably thank Sylvester Stallone for that. But I believe it goes back even further to Benny Franklin and Betty Ross. Philly used to be the capital of the new world. Then that was all ripped away from us. The nation’s capital moved to Washington D.C. (for some unknown reason) and New York got the a gigantic statue of liberty making our bell look like a meaningless piece of damaged copper. We became a hurt city, a forgotten city. So we did what most people do when they get their feelings hurt; we pretended our feelings weren’t hurt and redirected that pain toward a team and it’s players whom didn’t ask for any of it.

Mike Vick didn’t ask to be a symbol of redemption, but he is. And Philly bought into it 100%. There wasn’t much convincing needed either. We were waiting for him. Vick’s success with the Eagles last season meant more because of where he’d been, that much is obvious. If Vick could be a successful quarterback again, if he could do and say all the right things, then maybe America works. The system works. He had been rehabilitated and it’s because he trusted the system, legal and Andy Reid’s. There was a comforting feeling to that logic.

But it wasn’t true. Vick has clearly regressed this year and the success he had last year seems to be a mirage. Defenses know he can be easily confused, so they are disguising their coverage and it’s working.

The truth is becoming clear that the Eagles can’t win with Vick. And that’s a shame. A shame that Vick’s transformation wasn’t real, a shame that America isn’t real. Nothing is real. What’s the point?

(Author’s Note: I don’t really believe any of this is true, but I feel better now. Isn’t that what really matters?)
